HEART FIRST SPEAKING

The heart of the wise teaches his mouth and adds learning to his lips. Proverbs 16:23 NKJV

Proverbs 16:23 NKJV The heart of the wise teaches his mouth and adds learning to his lips.
Proverbs gives us great contrasts; wise versus foolish is one of the biggest themes. Here is how the wise act, and here are the actions of the foolish.

The wise use words differently than the foolish and this verse is a notable example of a wise person.

A wise person allows his heart to control his words. He speaks from the heart, not the emotions or reasoning. Because words have such power, we want to use them for the most effect.

APPLICATION

How many times have we said something off the "top of our head" or in the heat of the moment and later regretted those words?

If there is any area I would like to do over in my life, it's the words I have spoken. My words about family, or situations or other people have certainly done damage.

But the more I slow down and don't just say whatever comes to mind but speak from my heart my words heal instead of hurt. They strengthen instead of tear down. They bring life and light instead of negativity and darkness.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, teach me to wait and speak from my heart first. That will honor You and bless people.
