WHO YOU GONNA TRUST?

Psalm 20:7-8 NKJV
7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;
But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
8 They have bowed down and fallen;
But we have risen and stand upright.

I remember the movie from 1984, Ghostbusters. I actually missed the movie, but I remember the theme song: 'Who You Gonna Call? Ghostbusters.' I realize this is not a very spiritual way to start a devotional, but there is a place I am going here. When you need help, when it comes to where you put your trust. Who are you going to call?

Psalm 20 is a psalm of David, and he is qualified to speak to the statements made in our verses for today. "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses." During David's day, a chariot was an advanced war machine. We could liken them to a modern-day tank with their ability to plough through troops. A chariot on a battlefield of foot soldiers had to be a fearsome thing. Also, horses were powerful weapons of war. Horses would pull the chariots, and horses gave distinct advantages in terms of speed. It's easy to see why some would trust in horses and chariots.

But then David expresses where he put his trust. "But we will remember the name of the Lord our God." David put his trust in God. He had learned from an early age that God was the One who gave the ultimate victory. From David's battles with wild animals to giants and large armies, David knew that if God was with him, then he was going to come out on top. When you read about David's life, notice how often he would inquire or ask God before a battle. David's inquiries were a big part of his life and a big part of his success. God would tell David to fight or wait. God would instruct David to stay or go. When David trusted God and God's direction, he overcame despite the odds.

David, in verse eight, declares what happens to those who trust natural forces versus those who trust God. They, the ones trusting in horses and chariots, have bowed down and fallen. Their horses and chariots could not get the job done. But the ones trusting in God have risen and stand upright. Or we could say, when the dust settled, the ones who put their trust in God were still standing.

APPLICATION

Trusting in God is something we must keep before us. This is why consistent fellowship with Him in our private devotional life is so important. It is much easier to trust in someone you know. The more you know of our good Heavenly Father, the more you can put your trust in Him.

And trusting in God is something we must remind ourselves of. It's so easy to look to the natural things around us, the chariots and horses in our lives. Nothing wrong with using any natural advantages that we can, but our trust has to be in God. I remember when Joy was so sick and there was little the doctors could do. She continued going to the doctors, but her trust was in God. On a side note, when we are trusting in God, we tend to put less pressure on people, and we are not as disappointed when they can't help.

PRAYER

Lord, I trust You above anything I can see or feel in this world. You are my God now and will be forever. I put my trust in You.
