HIS HELP, HIS PEACE

JOHN 14:25-27

JOHN 14:25-27 NKJ
25 "These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

OBSERVATION:

John gives us some detailed insight into the last words Jesus shared with His disciples. The truths found in chapters 12-17 are amazing. No other gospel writer goes into this detail, but I am so glad the Holy Spirit prompted John to write these words.

In our passage for today, Jesus is preparing the disciples for His departure. He is about to go to the cross, and after the resurrection, He will not be on the earth long. At face value, this could not have been good news for the disciples until Jesus shares what will happen in His absence.

First, The Helper, the Holy Spirit, will come and teach and bring back Jesus' words that He spoke while on earth. Jesus will go into further detail about the Holy Spirit, but this is good news. Jesus had taught them, but He will not be present as He had been for 3 1/2 years. But the Helper will now teach and remind them of what Jesus said. So the disciples who surely did not write down everything He said will have help recalling His words. What a relief, what a major blessing.

But wait, there's more. He was not done. Jesus gave us HIs help and gave us His peace. This had to really speak to the disciples in a big way. They had watched Jesus live in peace through some stressful times. He never "lost it." He was always full of peace. And His peace would now be theirs. Wow! So they would not have to be troubled or fearful in their hearts. They would be at peace with God in the same way Jesus was.

He may have been leaving, but He left them well taken care of.

APPLICATION:

The wonderful news for the disciples is the same wonderful news for us today. We have the same Helper that helped the disciples. The Holy Spirit will teach us and bring God's word to our minds also.

And we have His peace. These promises were not limited to the twelve. These promises are available to anyone who has received Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

His help, His peace, our benefit!

PRAYER:

Thank You, Lord, for the Holy Spirit who helps me and teaches me. Thank You that I have the ability to walk in Your peace. My heart does not have to be troubled or afraid. What a blessing!
