1 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples; 2 and He said to them, "Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. 3 And if anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' say, 'The Lord has need of it,' and immediately he will send it here."
4 So they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. 5 But some of those who stood there said to them, "What are you doing, loosing the colt?"
6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go.
OBSERVATION:
This seems to be a very simple story. Jesus was instructing His disciples regarding obtaining the donkey for Him to ride.
Jesus told them where to go and where the donkey would be. Then He told them to loose the donkey and bring it.
What Jesus said next is interesting. He tells the two disciples what to say if anyone asks why they are loosing the donkey. If asked, they were to say the Lord has need of it, and the donkey will be released.
Everything happened just as Jesus said it would. They found the donkey and were untying it and were confronted by people standing nearby.
The two disciples spoke just as Jesus had commanded, and they let the donkey go.
What is interesting to note is that the disciples took Jesus' instructions as commands, including what to say. When they said what Jesus commanded them to say, the donkey situation worked out.
I wonder what would have happened if these two disciples had decided to add their own explanation. What if they had launched into defense because it appeared that they were stealing a donkey. But they obeyed the Lord throughout the entire process. They went where He told them to go and said what He told them to say.
APPLICATION:
Where we can take this short example and apply it to our lives is in the principle of obedience.
Obedience to go where the Lord instructs us to go. And to say what He instructs us to say. I believe this story was written to teach us this valuable principle.
As this principle applies to our words, we want to pay close attention. The Lord has instructed us in His word to speak words that impart grace. Words that help instead of hurt. Also, He has instructed us to speak words according to what we believe. Instead of negative speech regarding ourselves, we are to say what He tells us to say.
So, say you are a new creation. Say you are forgiven. Say you are God's workmanship. You get the picture. We are to say about ourselves and our lives what God has said in His word.
Jesus knew what to say then, and He knows what to say now. Say what He tells us to say.
