WHAT GOD'S WORD CAN DO FOR YOU

PROVERBS 6:20-23

PROVERBS 6:20-23 NKJ
20 My son, keep your father's command,
And do not forsake the law of your mother.
21 Bind them continually upon your heart;
Tie them around your neck.
22 When you roam, they will lead you;
When you sleep, they will keep you;
And when you awake, they will speak with you.
23 For the commandment is a lamp,
And the law a light;
Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,

 OBSERVATION:

A number of years ago, the delivery service UPS had an advertising slogan: "See what Brown can do for you." Brown being the color of UPS trucks.

In our verses for today, Solomon is giving advice to a young person to keep the commands and ways of his parents.

But we can easily take these inspired words and apply them to God's word and ways. Because if parents' wisdom will bless the one who keeps it, how much more will God's wisdom bless his children? This passage shows us some of the things God’s word can do for us.

So the benefits of God's words are big. The caveat is that God's words must be kept. This is why we are encouraged to bind them on our heart and tie them around our neck. That would imply we are not treating His words casually, but rather we are holding them close. Holding them close by thinking about God's words and applying them to our everyday living.

If we continually put God's word into our hearts, minds, and actions, it will work in our lives.

God's word will provide guidance on how to live. God's word will work in us while we sleep and speak to us when we wake up.

God's word will enlighten us and cause us to see what others may not see.

God's word will correct us so that we walk in the ways of life, not death.

APPLICATION:

Over the years, Joy and I can attest to the fact that God's word has made a huge difference in our lives.

His word has taught us how to navigate marriage and raise three children. His word has kept us out of more trouble than we even realize. God's word has given us comfort and hope. It has been an anchor when things got stormy and a place of refuge.

We have not lived perfect, but because of God's word, we have lived so much better than we would have without it.

Neither of us have any regrets for spending time and giving attention to God's word.

PRAYER:

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for Your word. Please open my eyes that I may see even more of what Your word can do for my life.
