IN AWE OF GOD

PSALM 33:6-11 NKJV

6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,

And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.

7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap;

He lays up the deep in storehouses.

8 Let all the earth fear the Lord;

Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

9 For He spoke, and it was done;

He commanded, and it stood fast.

10 The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;

He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.

11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever,

The plans of His heart to all generations.

The Psalms are amazing. We can see the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in how varied they are. There is instruction and encouragement. There is heartfelt cries for help. And there is insight into God and His nature. Our verses for today are particularly insightful as to the power and majesty of God.

In these short six verses, we have an overview of creation and the power of God. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made. And all the scope of the universe by His mouth. If we stopped right here, we have eclipsed our minds’ ability to grasp just how powerful that verse is. Our God created the world by His words. I heard a minister say, and I also believe it. If you can believe Genesis 1:1, in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, then you should have no problem with the rest of the Bible.

Believing that God created all we know by His words and gathered the waters of the seas together opens our understanding to the greatness and awe of God. David must have caught sight of this because he states that all the earth should fear the Lord. That all the inhabitants should stand in awe of Him. Because He spoke, and it was done. He gave the command, and it stood fast and is still standing.

Because we live in a world that is dominated by the physical senses, shifting our focus to how God made the universe is vital. It’s too easy to lose the awe of God. The voices in our world are loud and clanging. They doubt the existence of God and make up all kinds of unbelievable stories as to how the world was created. It takes more faith to believe that our earth was created by a big explosion than it does to believe in a God who has the power to create with His words. This is why praising God and reading the Psalms is important. Doing these things shifts our focus off this temporal realm and makes us more aware of the reality of the spiritual realm.

Verses 10-11 apply to our culture today. The world and its nations have all kinds of ideas and philosophies. And they are not working well. But the Lord’s counsel stands forever. His plans to all generations. The Lord’s counsel regarding sex, gender, marriage, money, relationships, and any other subject is what stands. Regardless of how progressive we think we have become, we have not progressed past the wisdom of our God. When we lose the awe of God, we lose respect for His ways. And those are seeds we don’t want to plant.

One day everyone will stand before Him to give an account of their lives. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to know the Lord and receive His salvation. So grateful that I did not allow human pride to keep me away from His goodness. One day everyone will acknowledge the majesty of God and stand in awe of Him. But we can choose to do that voluntarily now.

PRAYER:

Father God, thank You for Your mercy to me. Thank You for creating me. I owe you everything, and I stand in awe of You.
