WE WHO ARE STRONG

ROMANS 15:1-3 NKJV

1 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. 3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me."

A couple of things to keep in mind when reading Romans or any of the others epistles.

These letters to the churches were not divided into chapters and verses. The translators added them years later to help us reference the scriptures. I am glad the chapters and verses were added, but we can't lose sight of the continuous thoughts and themes.

And we must remember that the Holy Spirit was the divine inspiration behind these letters.

So the Holy Spirit, through the apostle Paul, is emphasizing to the church how to treat one another. This continues the theme of chapter 14, where we are encouraged not to judge.

Now we are encouraged on how to treat one who is weaker in the faith. The stronger we are spiritually, the more we put up with others, not put down others.

In God's kingdom, the stronger you are, the more you do for others. And the less you please yourself. It takes strength to not do what is best for you but rather to do what is best for someone else.

Now we are dipping our toes into some deep water. Can you imagine what it would be like if thousands of believers all over our area started living this way?

The strength it takes to please others before we please ourselves is Christ-like strength.

He did not please Himself but instead took the reproaches and insults of man even though He never sinned or made a mistake.

The Holy Spirit, through Paul, is encouraging us to do the very same thing Jesus did.

APPLICATION:

We can see why this was addressed to the strong. It requires strength to respond the right way toward weakness.

In God's kingdom, strength is used to serve and bless. In the world's system, strength is used to dominate and be served.

So, as we lead up to Easter, look for ways we can please and build up those around us for their benefit. And join the fellowship of the strong.

PRAYER:

Lord, thank You for Your example and Your strength. Make me a blessing to someone today.
